The Collected Shorts of Jan Svankmajer: Vol 1

August 5, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Jan Svankmajer is a pioneer in surreal animation and in particular stop-motion animation. He is credited with having a major influence on Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and the Brothers Quay. Svankmajer was born in Prague in 1934 and has been turning out his imaginative and creepy animation since the early 60s. This collection of shorts was my first exposure to his work and I think it is a great introduction. Since then I have also watched Alice, his warped version of Alice in Wonderland.

Included in this collection is A Game With Stones, Punch and Judy and Picnic with Weissmann. Again, like with most of my five e feelms, this collection won’t be for everybody. Creepy is the best adjective I can use to describe the feeling of his movies, but they are also very imaginative and unique. You may not like it, but I can guarantee you have not watched anything else like it either!

Enjoy
